Big Walk and Wheel: 24 March - 4 April 2025
The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel encourages pupils to take active journeys to school, helping to improve air quality in their communities while discovering the positive impact of these changes on the world around them.
Open to all primary and secondary schools across the UK, including SEN/ASN/ALN schools, the challenge is free to join, with exciting daily prizes to be won.
Each day, schools compete to achieve the highest percentage of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting, or cycling to school. Your school’s top five days will determine its final ranking, but you can log journeys across all ten days for extra participation.
How many active journeys will your pupils complete?

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2025
Since its launch in 2011 as the Sustrans Big Pedal, this initiative has evolved into much more than a cycling competition.
Now the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting, and cycling challenge, Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel inspires hundreds of thousands of pupils to get active on their journey to school. The 2025 challenge runs from 24 March – 4 April.
How It Works
Over two weeks, schools compete to record the highest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting, or cycling to school—all while learning about the benefits of active travel.
The challenge is designed to be fun, flexible, and inclusive for all. Interactive school resources ensure maximum participation from pupils, staff, parents, and carers. Pupils learning remotely can also take part by counting any active journeys from home or physical activities completed at home as one journey.
