Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day 2025 will take place on the 11th of February 2025
Safer Internet Day 2025 will be held on 11th February 2025, focusing on the theme "Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online."
As the UK's largest celebration of online safety, Safer Internet Day highlights important online issues that young people encounter. This year, in response to feedback from young people across the UK, the day will concentrate on the growing issue of online scams. The goal is to help young people understand how to protect themselves and others from scams and raise awareness of the support available to them.
Since its inception in 2004 as part of the EU SafeBorders project and its adoption by the Insafe network in 2005, Safer Internet Day has become a significant event in the online safety calendar. Now celebrated in approximately 170 countries worldwide, it continues to grow in reach and impact.
A range of resources has been created to support the delivery of sessions for Safer Internet Day, suitable for schools, nurseries, youth groups, libraries, police services, and beyond. These educational materials are specifically designed to help educators address the campaign theme of scams online.
Free resources are available for different age groups: 3-7, 7-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years old. Each resource pack includes presentation slides, activities, and a whole-school assembly. With support from the Welsh Government and the Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland, these resources are also available in Welsh and Irish.
The event will explore the scale of online scams, allowing young people to share their experiences and ideas for addressing the problem. Topics will include online financial sextortion and the future of scams, with discussions around questions such as:
How will emerging technologies, like generative AI, impact scam tactics?;
What role can the government and the tech industry play in tackling online scams?; and
What changes would young people like to see to enhance their protection in the future?
Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day brings together thousands of organizations to promote the safe, responsible, and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
About Safer Internet Day
Educational Resources
BBC Teach have created a collection of teaching resources that can be used to explore online safety with both primary and secondary pupils.
The resources can be used to educate pupils on using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. They could also help pupils recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour online, as well helping them to identify ways of reporting concerns about content and contact.
