Get Involved With National School Sports Week: 16-22 June 2025
What is National School Sport Week?
National School Sport Week is an annual celebration of the vital role that sport and physical activity play in the lives of children and young people. Launched in 2008 by the Youth Sport Trust, a children’s charity dedicated to improving the wellbeing of young people through sport, the campaign has grown into a nationwide event embraced by schools, families, and communities across the UK.
Originally designed to promote sport in schools, the event adapted in 2020 to become National School Sport Week at Home during the pandemic, encouraging children and families to stay active despite lockdown restrictions. Since then, the spirit of inclusion and adaptability has remained central to the campaign.
Each year brings a fresh focus to the celebration. In 2021, the theme was “Together Again,” reflecting the joy of reconnecting through sport after a time of separation. For 2025, the theme is “Belonging – a place in sport for every child,” highlighting the importance of inclusivity and the idea that all children, regardless of background or ability, should feel welcome and valued in sporting environments. The week will be marked by sports days and events held in schools and communities across the country, celebrating the unifying power of physical activity.
When will it take place?
National School Sport Week 2025 will run from the 16th to the 22nd of June.
Why does it matter?
This campaign is about more than just games—it's a powerful reminder of the many benefits sport brings to children's development. Participation in physical activity supports not only physical health but also mental wellbeing. It fosters teamwork, builds confidence, enhances motor skills, and encourages social connections. For many children, especially those who may struggle academically or socially, sport provides a unique opportunity to shine.
By celebrating National School Sport Week, schools and families highlight the importance of movement and play in a child’s day. Hosting activities like sports days, friendly competitions, or inclusive games creates a sense of community and belonging, and shows children that there’s a place for everyone in sport.
How can you get involved?
The Youth Sport Trust invites schools, teachers, parents, and carers to take part in this exciting week by organizing events that reflect the values of inclusion and fun. Schools can sign up online to access resources and ideas for making the week special. Parents who want to support or host activities at home or in their communities can also register their interest and find useful tips for getting involved.
Whether you're running a full-scale sports day or encouraging your class to try a new game together, your participation helps to promote a positive, active lifestyle and ensures that every child feels they have a place on the field, the court, or the playground.
